Another Great Track for your Summer Playlist…

Arcade Fire is a great indie rock band, and one of the best to ever come out of Canada. They gained mainstream recognition in 2011 when they won the Grammy for Album of the Year, but were certainly well known much before that.  One of the things I love about these guys and gals is the diversity of their sound and the range of instruments they use on their album (including guitar, drums, bass guitar, piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, xylophone, glockenspiel, keyboard, French horn, accordion, harp, mandolin, and hurdy-gurdy).

This track from their 2004 debut album Funeral and is called “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)” and is currently on my Summer 2012 mix :)  Enjoy!

The Kooks. Great song for your summer playlist!

British pop/post punk rock band The Kooks came on the scene in 2005, and unfortunately (or fortunately depending how you look at it) their debut album debuted on the same day as the much anticipated monster debut album of another Brit band, The Arctic Monkeys. That allowed The Kooks to travel under the radar for some time but not too long as their album of catchy songs wouldnt go unnoticed for long. They eventually top the charts in the UK and Ireland and won the MTV Europe Music Award for best UK/Ireland band in 2006.

This track has made its way on to my Summer 2012 mix because its just such a feel good song. Its called “Naive” and is off that debut album. Check it!

This video is just badass. Check out The Dead Weather

The Dead Weather is/was a rock band conceived by the modern day legend that is Jack White (drums and vocals), and includes Alison Mosshart of The Kills (vocals), Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age (keys and guitar) and Jack Lawrence (bass) who also worked with Jack in The Raconteurs.

This track “Treat Me Like Your Mother” was released off their 2009 debut album titled Horehound and the accompanying video to me has the grit, simplicity and toughness that a true rock video should. I really dig the song also and think the video is a perfect compliment to it. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Music, meets Sports. Sports, meet music.

Music and sports have been part of each others lives since the Ancient Greeks thousands of years ago. Sometimes music is used to entertain leading up to an event or during intermissions, or its used as a soundtrack during events and other times its used as a tool within the game to get fans fired up.  In my completely unbiased opinion (wink wink), the best use of music in sport to get a crowd fired up is at New York Yankee home games when the team blares Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” to signal the entrance of my favorite baseball player, Mariano Rivera, coming into the game to close out the Yankee win.

For non baseball fans, Mariano Rivera is at this point unanimously known as the best closing pitcher to ever play the game. A closing pitcher, or closer, is a pitcher that comes in the game at the very end when their team is winning a close game to preserve the victory.  Mariano, or Mo as he’s known, has virtually every record a closer can have and despite pitching the same 3 pitches for 15 years now, nobody can touch him still.

While Mo didn’t pick the song, and doesn’t necessarily like the song, its perfect for two reasons. First, the “sandman” is known in children’s stories to put kids to sleep and that is basically what Mo does, he puts the other teams batters to bed. Second, and most importantly, this song is so powerful and has one of the greatest intros ever written in rock music history so it gets the crowd at the stadium on their feet and going nuts which helps get the Yankees hyped and is intimidating for other teams to play in.

Without further adieu, check out the music video below as well as a video of Mo entering the game to this anthem. Enjoy!
